Hello and welcome to the 142nd edition of the Screenshot of the Week!

To start with, congratulations to the winner of the previous contest! pinckerman's screenshot from won with 17 upvotes!

Last week's winning screenshot one

To submit a screenshot, simply post it as an answer to this question, but please take note of the following:

  • One screenshot per post, and one post per person, please!
  • Limited picture modifications are allowed, such as cropping, simple filters, and blurring of identifying info such as names, but not adding other images or text.
  • To ensure a fair playing field, please post screenshots you've taken yourself rather than ones you found online.
  • Stack Exchange’s Code of Conduct still applies - so if it would be unacceptable to post normally, it’s unacceptable here.

Also, try to avoid pictures that include spoilers. We want everyone to be able to enjoy this contest, so the less spoilers the better.

How long will the contest run?

We will accept submissions for a week, until May 26, 2025, then have a second week-long period where only voting will be accepted. This is to give every submission, even those posted at the end of the first week, a chance to be voted on by everyone.

After the end of the second week, at June 2, 2025, we will count upvotes only to determine the winning screenshot, which will be featured for a week on the main site's photo widget.

I wonder why the question is marked as modified today when I don't see any trace of edit, hmm (edit: I just realised it's because someone edited an answer). Oh, by the way, it looks like the submission period is over.

@Clockwork In a way, I guess, now that you mention it: I have always been intrigued by the techniques used to recreate convincing surfaces in games/CGI (and art), and water is a mix of extremes the evolution of which has been a clear curve for a long time (high specularity (cubemaps to real-time reflections), animated normal maps, tessellation, vertex mapping, edge detection for waves, no to simple to complicated physics - I remember Half-Life ported to Source, Lost Coast, Morrowind, Crysis, ACIV impressing me. ...and Dishonored always gets me :).

@Alex To clarify Wondercricket's comment: the phrase intrinsically has nothing to do with Bethesda, but is used a lot in conjunction with their games because they are notoriously buggy (regularly to hilarious effect). The phrase itself already was used in the 1970s.

The protagonist clearly is (selectively) near-sighted :) (I remember being annoyed by the game's DoF, which could only be disabled by an .ini fix or so.)
    – Joachim
    Commented May 21 at 15:16
  • 1
@Joachim At first, I assumed this was a game where the background was blurry so the game artists didn't have to put too much effort in the art style. The near-sighted character is actually an interesting touch! :D
    – Alex
    Commented May 22 at 19:30
  • Imagine playing a game where the player was far-sighted. It would kind of kill your own eyes if you get too close to something. :p
    – Alex
    Commented May 22 at 19:31

@Alex But those are indeed very interesting concepts. There are a few games where you play a blind person, and in one I think I remember you can see only vague shapes, while another is completely (spatial) audio-driven. Something that comes close in the more mainstream games is that annoying tinnitus-like beep after a grenade explodes near the player's position. But how about playing someone with agnosia? Or amnesia - how could you translate that? Very interesting to think about.

@Joachim I also have an over 10 year old Unity concept game where you just walk around some kind of unrealistic world and pick up "things" to read backstory about the "character" you're playing. It felt like the character is dealing with depression induced memory loss or something, because the last "thing" I picked up made it feel like the character lost someone or something important, as you approach an empty dog house.

@Joachim I have this strange feeling I've also played a game wherein a character is amnesiac, and the process of piercing up together the memory is how you learn more about the character (like you would with a more traditional character, when you read materials scattered around and talk to others around you)... Unless I'm starting to mix everything in my head. Did I actually play something like that? Edit: Yes I did, except it's more complicated (Tales of the Abyss).

@Clockwork Oh, I'll check that out! The walking simulator sounds interesting, too, but Dear Esther comes very close to that, except the excerpts you read (and hear) are semi-random, suggesting the possibility of the protagonist having amnesia, but intended more like a pure gameplay element, I think.

@Joachim There’s a VR game called Blind where you can only see if you make sound (eg by knocking stuff over). Later you get a walking stick to make it easier. It’s an echolocation kinda thing.

First public screenshot of Wonder World. What you are seeing is a planes biome where grass doesn't exist for some reason, Oceans are as big as ponds, and some trees are half cut.

Anyone else getting Herobrine vibes from this picture??

  • @Alex I had a... let's say very "Frankenstein" Windows 7 which I still loved dearly. But on some rare occasions, the session would "die prematurely", forcing me to shut down the PC and reboot (or wait long enough for the blue screen to appear). That time, it happened right after I had died to Absolute Radiance.
